Sangsad Bhaban, 23 Jan (UNB) - Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain yesterday accused Ershad and Khaleda governments of crippling Biman, the national airlines, and turning it into a losing concern.


Speaking on thanksgiving motion on the President's new year speech in parliament, he alleged that former president Ershad had pocketed millions of taka by purchasing two ATP aircraft.


He also charged former prime minister Begum Zia and her finance minister Saifur Rahman with misappropriating USD 50 million through purchase of two airbuses at USD 150 million against of the original price of USD 100 million.


Highlighting the development works done by the Awami League government, the Minister said Chittagong airport has been upgraded at a cost of Tk 541 crore and the Prime Minister would formally inaugurate it on March 24 next.


Mosharraf said the passenger and cargo capacity of the national airlines had been increased and its revenue income had gone up due to various measures including increase of flights in different routes. He mentioned three weekly flights in the Sylhet-London sector.


Participating in the motion, State Minister for Religious Affairs Moulana Mohammad Nurul Islam recalled the contribution of Bangabandhu to the modernisation of the Islamic Foundation and formation of the Madrasha Board for development of Islamic studies in the country.


He said the present government has built Islamic Foundation building at Agargaon at a cost of Tk 100 million. "Only saying Bismillah and shedding crocodile tears for Islam does not bring anything", the moulana added.


State Minister for Jute AK Faizul Huq informed that the present government had taken up a project for BMRE of the Adamjee Jute Mills. The BMRE is the first in the history of the mill.


He said Mercedes Benz company is going to set up a component manufacturing industry in the country where jute will be the raw material. The export-oriented industry will generate employment opportunities, he said.


Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Kalpa Ranjan Chakma and Khaleda Khanam MP also participated in the thanksgiving motion and highlighted the achievements of the Awami League government.
